Red Sox sign Jacoby Ellsbury, six others to one-year deals

Saturday January 19th, 2013
Boston Red Sox: Red Sox sign Jacoby Ellsbury, six others to one-year deals The Red Sox signed seven of their arbitration-eligible players on Friday, agreeing to one-year contracts with center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury and six relief pitchers.
Ellsbury received $9 million in his final year of arbitration eligibility, the team announced on its website, a raise of $950,000. Ellsbury played in 74 games last season, hitting .271 with four home runs and 14 stolen bases.
Ellsbury has signed three consecutive one-year contracts since becoming eligible for arbitration. He will be eligible for free agency after the coming season and seems sure to enter the market.
So far, Ellsbury and agent Scott Boras have not been interested in the idea of a long-term extension with the Sox, something Dustin Pedroia, Clay Buchholz, and Jon Lester have done at similar points of their careers.
Closer Joel Hanrahan, who was obtained from the Pittsburgh Pirates in December, received $7.04 million in his final season of arbitration. That was a jump from the $4.1 million he made last season.
Hanrahan can earn an additional $60,000 based on how many games he finishes.
The Red Sox also signed Andrew Bailey ($4.1 million), Alfredo Aceves ($2.65 million), Daniel Bard ($1.86 million), Franklin Morales ($1.48 million), and Andrew Miller ($1.47 million).
Aceves, who led the team with 69 appearances last season, received a raise of $1.45 million. He also has an incentive clause based on how many appearances he makes.
The Sox signed catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia to a one-year, $4.5 million contract on Thursday.
The only arbitration-eligible player left unsigned is lefthanded reliever Craig Breslow.
Breslow filed a proposed salary of $2.375 million with Major League Baseball. The Red Sox submitted $2.325 million. With such little disparity, an agreement should be forthcoming.
